A Libyan burglar was jailed for 26 months after a court found him guilty of the theft of cash, electronics and documents from a suite at the Hilton in St Julian’s in December 2013.

The theft took place just four days after he had been handed a suspended sentence for stealing a handbag.

Walid Ben Muftah, 23, was found guilty of aggravated theft, dealing in stolen goods and breaching the terms of a suspended sentence.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella had heard how three guests caught the man leaving the room through the balcony on December 2, 2013.

He was arrested when police found him sitting outside a nearby pastizzerija. He was wearing a red jacket and a yellow baseball cap which matched the description given by the guests.

Police inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.
