A public hearing featuring long-awaited testimony by Hillary Clinton about an attack on a US consulate in Libya in 2012 has begun.

Mrs Clinton entered the hearing room and greeted the panel's chairman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, and other members.

Mrs Clinton is the Democratic front-runner for president. She is testifying on the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi that killed four Americans. Mrs Clinton was secretary of state at the time.

Her testimony is a key moment for Mrs Clinton as she seeks to solidify her hold on the Democratic nomination. It is also crucial for the committee, which has seen its credibility eroded in recent weeks.

Republican politicians including House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy have credited the panel with bringing down Mrs Clinton's poll numbers.
