The first ever National Senior Championships were played at the Eden SuperBowl recently. The championships were open to bowlers aged 50 and over.
Emulating a number of international senior events, including the SuperBowl’s Senior Open, a handicap system was adopted which awards extra game points to bowlers according to their age.
The championships were held over a six-game session with simple total pinfall, including bonus, deciding the winners.
In the women’s division, it was Josephine Borg who claimed the honours. Her scratch total of 995 pins was boosted by 12 bonus pins for a 1,007 gross total, a mere two pins ahead of scratch bowler Marianne Mula in second place.
Josephine Bonello was third with a 927 total, ahead of Doris Zammit.
Benny Hili won the men’s event. Bowling scratch, Hili’s 1,178 tally bettered that of second-placed Roy Swift who had a 1,131 total. Leli Baldacchino was third on 1,114 pins and John Balani fourth on 1,094.
