Hibernians’s imperious run at the top of the BOV Premier League sees no relenting as they cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Naxxar Lions at the National Stadium today.

The Paolites took some time to impose their game and in fact their first real opportunity arrived on 23 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Naxxar defender Andrew Scicluna brought down Hibs striker Luis Edison inside the area and referee Marco Borg immediately pointed to the spot.

From the penalty, Clayton Failla saw his thumping drive pushed away by Naxxar goalkeeper Luke Pecorella.

But Failla soon made amends as three minutes later he took charge of a central free-kick and the Hibs winger let fly a spectacular curling drive that flew into the top corner of the net.

Naxxar struggled to react and on 37 minutes Joseph Mbong picked Jonathan Pearson inside the area who quickly nodded the ball into the path of Edison but the Brazilian fired over.

On the restart, the Paolites looked to stamp their authority and three minutes into the second half they were almost regaled with a second goal when goalkeeper Pecorella inexplicably charged out of goal to block the advancing Edison who ably turned past they Naxxar custodian but his effort was cleared off the line by the well-placed Scicluna.

Hibs continued to call the tune and on 59 minutes Cohen put Mbong clear but the Malta U-19 forward was thwarted by the onrushing Pecorella.

But the Paolites doubled their lead on 61 minutes when Kristensen brought clear on the right and sent a low cross that rolled past goalkeeper Pecorella and into the path or Edison who had littled difficulty in stabbing the ball into an empty net.

Clayton Failla, of Hibernians, was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
