Culture Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera said today that the government is toying with the idea of holding three carnivals a year – a proposal made by carnival enthusiasts.

Addressing the second session of a Government public consultation meeting with members of Cabinet at Castille, Dr Herrera said that following meetings with various people involved in the sector he would be proposing to cabinet the holding of a traditional carnival in winter, a full-carnival with floats in May and a mini-carnival in summer. He said that carnival was one of his top priorities in the cultural sector and the government intended to boost this “popular culture.”

Welcoming Dr Herrera’s initiatives – George Zahra – a household name where it come to Carnival said that the May carnival should be held over two weekends and “more ideas will be given to the government shortly.”

Dr Herrera, who addressed the very well attended dialogue meeting together with Tourism Minister Kermenu Vella, said that the government will also be taking initiatives where it comes to censorship, with the possibility of enacting a new law allowing for the showing and holding of “adult” shows which might be objectionable to certain strata of society.

Without specifying, he said that “pornography” may be allowed in certain “controlled” environments.
