Sun, sea and the beach were as important to the performers at the Isle of MTV concert as the show itself, with the island's weather and hospitality forming a major part of the package.

American R&B singer-songwriter Kelis told The Times before her performance that it was "wonderful" to have fans out here and that music could stretch so far. But really, it was the "beach bum" inside her that was benefitting the most.

Asked about her muse, she ignored the music aspect and said she was more "inspired" to rip off her rainbow-coloured dress and put on a bathing suit.

"It's great to still be able to go somewhere new after 12 years of doing this!"

Kelis had tweeted that she did not like Maltese food but later explained she had not managed to get a clear answer on what exactly constituted the local cuisine and was remotely aware that it was rabbit.

Unfortunately, this was not her favourite dish, she said almost apologetically at a press conference at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, dressed in a stunning maxi dress, weighed down with equally eye-catching accessories.

Kelis has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice but it has eluded her on both occasions.

For the singer, however, winning accolades did not really matter and had no bearing on anything.

"It does not change how people perceive your work... Honestly, I only care because I have lots of dresses I would like to wear. Whether I win, or not, I get to wear my dress!"

And anyway, after a mere decade in the music industry, she feels she has accomplished her goals: "I haven't had a nine-to-five job since I was 17 to sustain my needs; I've had a child; and I fit into my jeans again...

"It's about whether it is still fun for me," she says about her career as a singer.

The Brit Award winner said she loved Scissor Sisters and that they have been constantly talking about collaborating. Discussions could have continued in Malta as they shared the same stage... And they were both fresh from Glastonbury too.

The American band, known for its mixture of glam rock, disco and alternative music, needed to recover from the UK festival - and "swimming in the Malta sea and soaking up the sun" were just what the doctor ordered.

But an onstage kiss with Kylie Minogue at Glastonbury, which appeared to be dirtier than it actually was, dominated yesterday's press conference.

The band's lead singer Ana Matronic assured that it looked more intimate than it was. Their mouths were closed and it was merely a goodbye peck, she explained of the unscripted kiss that has made waves in the British media.

Legendary rock star, Kid Rock, turned up in yet another hat, but a reference and comparison to the widow of former Philippines president Imelda Marcos, for her extensive shoe collection, went straight over the top of his head.

Known for his genre-spanning sound, ranging from classic rock and hip hop to country, he was more clued on when he spoke about what he considered "real" music - and that definitely did not include anything that was generated by a computer; "no trickery and tomfoolery!"

Making music was about "writing a song with a guitar and not about today's white kids with drum machines", he said, making derogatory, clicking sounds of the detested electronic beats.

For the self-confessed small-town guy, who was happy to be around friends and family and keep to himself, Malta was... "old"... and "a long way from home".

Asked about getting lost on a Sunseeker on Tuesday, he said he had no idea where he was to begin with! He was told he would be going to the Blue Lagoon only to "end up in a place like this (Marsamxett Harbour), but through 40 minutes of waves".

French DJ and producer David Guetta is by no means new to the Maltese music scene and he is due back on September 20 - but with more of a "proper DJ show" as opposed to last night's "pop" performance.

He plans to play a lot of new music in a three-hour set, which he finds more exciting.

In the meantime, from now until September, the musician, who is first and foremost a DJ, will be in a different city every single day, with the only fixed date on his calendar being his sell-out Thursday nights in Ibiza.

David Guetta plays music every night and makes music all day, but he would not change his lifestyle for anything.

"I love music and I never really get enough really. What is difficult for me is not to live like that. I love it that people get so excited about my music. It drives me to make more."

Ranking third last year in a Top 100 DJs poll by DJ Magazine, David Guetta is also a famed hit maker and has collaborated with a host of big names, having worked with the Black Eyed Peas on I Gotta Feeling, among others.

But he is not obsessed with big names and just enjoys working with "anyone who has talent".

Everything that has happened to him is beyond his dreams and he never expected half of it, he told The Times before working the crowd with massive cross-over records at the Isle of MTV concert.
