Former Parliamentary Secretary Helen D'Amato was today appointed Children's Commissioner for a three-year term.

She succeeds Carmen Zammit.

In comments during a meeting with the Prime Minister, Mrs D'Amato said she would focus on four pillars - the promotion of children's rights, the prevention of abuse, the participation of children in society and making sure that the necessary services are in place even to prevent problems.

"The best thing you can give to children is a stable family," she said, but this was not always a reality, which was why she would also give added importance to fostering. She would also seek to address services aimed at helping adolescents with behavioural problems.

Mrs D'Amato said the structure of the Family Court also needed to change, particularly to give a stronger voice to children.

Dr Gonzi said Mrs D'Amato, a former teacher had extensive experience of dealing with children, and her nomination had been unanimously backed by the government.
