Hedgehogs are highly adaptable and adjust well to city living if they can find suitable gardens and parks, a study has shown.

After 15 million years of evolution, the humble hedgehog has learned to cope with all kinds of environmental changes, including urbanisation, say scientists.

To investigate how well street-wise hedgehogs were coping, a German team fitted a number of the prickly creatures with temperature-sensitive transmitters.

The devices allowed the researchers to monitor hibernation patterns, winter nest-site use, and the territory over which the animals roamed.
