The inclement weather that hit the Maltese islands yesterday caused the postponement of the two Premier League matches that were scheduled to be played in the afternoon.

The heavy downpours rendered the pitch of the National Stadium unfit to host any football action yesterday, prompting the Malta FA to call off two top-flight matches, namely Vittoriosa Stars vs Sliema Wanderers and Qormi vs Tarxien Rainbows.

The postponed games have been rescheduled for tomorrow at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, with the first match kicking off at 6 p.m.

Weather-permitting, the league will continue this afternoon with another two-match programme at the National Stadium.

Ħamrun Spartans face Floriana in the opening match at 3 p.m. while the second game, at 5, is between Marsaxlokk and Hibernians.

After a two-week international break, the 2010/11 BOV Premier League resumed on Friday night with the much-awaited clash between champions Birkirkara and rivals Valletta.

A hard-fought match ended two-all with Trevor Cilia, who had put Birkirkara ahead on 24 minutes, hitting a stunning equaliser for the champions 10 minutes from time.

Birkirkara were forced into an early reshuffle during Friday’s match as Shaun Bajada and Rowen Muscat had to be substituted after suffering ankle injuries.

Muscat was taken to hospital for X-rays on his swollen ankle amid fears that the young midfielder may have torn his ligaments. The medical tests showed that Muscat had sprained his ligaments but suffered no fractures.

Bajada, who was the first to go off after just 20 minutes, also sprained the ligaments in his left ankle. As the Birkirkara duo are likely to be sidelined for between four to six weeks, Bajada could miss Malta’s Euro 2012 qualifier away to Croatia on November 17.
