A man was today jailed for 15 months and fined €1,200 after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

David Borg, 41, from Mgarr, who works as a panel beater and sprayer, also pleaded guilty to cocaine possession on and before November 2013 and having a weapon and a substantial amount of ammunition without a police licence.

Noting that he had a clean police record, Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras said the total amount of drugs found in his possession was almost 230 grams, which was not an insignificant amount.

The court also took into consideration that Mr Borg was a heavy cannabis user and consumed a large number of joints every day, sometimes up to 25, which he considered to be his cigarettes. He told the court that he has been dependent on cannabis for the past 20 years.

Magistrate Galea Sciberras recommended to the prison authorities to help Mr Borg kick the habit.
