The 25 members of Payzone Co-operative, which primarily caters for the installation and maintenance of phone boxes, have agreed to terminate their employment from Maltacom and continue the operations on their own steam.

This is seven months before the two-year deadline they had to decide whether they were confident in their ability to continue on their own. The co-operative was set up in November 2000.

During an official ceremony in the presence of the Prime Minister and other Cabinet ministers, Payzone chairman Alfred Scicluna said the decision was taken following a very successful first year, the result of the team spirit that exists between all members. Payzone has more than 1,800 cardphones, 850 of which are in public areas in Malta and Gozo.

Payzone also issues new telecards and has also signed an agreement to instal and maintain the Web phones, which Maltacom is introducing shortly.

Maltacom chairman Maurice Zarb Adami said Payzone knew its success to the foresight, hard work and flexibility of its members. The agreement between the two sides could be extended onece the government renewed Maltacom`s licence in 2010.

Dr Fenech Adami praised the workers` initiative, saying he would like to see more co-operatives being set up. While auguring the co-operative success, Dr Fenech Adami said it was of paramount importance for the workers to have self-confidence and be convinced of their capabilities. It was only through such a frame of mind that the worker could guarantee his future and help the country in the long run.

Attending the ceremony were, among others, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Policy, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, Economic Services Minister Professor Josef Bonnici, the chairman of the Co-operatives Board, Professor Godfrey Baldacchino, Payzone members and their spouses, Maltacom board directors and Lino Debono, secretary of the GWU`s Communications and Energy Section.

Long service awards presented to employees

A third of the awardees were presented wtih the 10-year award. On this occasion, the majority of those receiving the award were from Capua Palace Hospital and from the Sol Suncrest Hotel. The award was given to 582 employees since its launch seven years ago.

Mr Xuereb congratulated all the awardees and in a brief address emphasised AX Group`s continuous search for new challenges through new local and foreign ventures.

Society of Arts` buffet dinner

A buffet dinner in aid of activities connected with the marking of the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, was held at the Crowne Plaza, Tignè, Sliema, last month.

This first fund-raising activity of the society, for members and friends, attracted such a demand that attendance surpassed the targeted figure three times over. In fact, almost 200 guests filled the Four Seasons restaurant to capacity.

A number of sponsors donated presents to be raffled for the occasion - at least 20 of the satisfied diners went home carrying a valuable prize. The occasion augured well for other activities planned for the future.

Paul Asciak, in a short welcoming speech, thanked those attending and named the sponsors for their kind donations, remarking that the society was the only such society that had survived within the Commonwealth.

The call of support being extended on that evening evidently showed that those present had the society at heart and was an encouragement to council officials.

Fund raising evening with Freddie Portelli

The Friends of the Little Sisters of the Poor recently got together at the Marsa Sports Club for an informal fund-raising event.

The pasta buffet was very tasty and the evening well organised. It was evident from the chatter and laughter that everyone was having a good time and Freddie Portelli was greeted by loud roars of appreciation.

Before long, the dance floor was a mass of colour as everyone danced and sang along with the ever popular songs of the Sixties and Seventies.

The evening was over far too quickly but another fund-raising event is being planned for mid-July in an effort to put together a good donation for the home of the elderly in Hamrun.

Appreciation - Anthony Griscti

by Mr Vincent Farrugia, director-general, GRTU - Association of General Retailers and Traders

Anthony Griscti`s gold embroidery has adorned uniforms and vestments of high finesse and distinction. Beauty, art and vision, expressed in all that he has produced. The man himself, who died on May 17 at the age of 98, was made of the finest metal. He emerged as a leading retailer and producer during the peak of British rule in Malta.

At a time when few entrepreneurs ventured in both retailing and production, he built an enterprise that employed more than 60 direct workers and numerous outside workers working from convents and households.

His relationship with his employees, suppliers and clients was always correct and fine-tuned. He was more of a father figure than an employer. He was a gentleman respected by the business community and the British administration in whose court he was always a welcome interlocutor.

Realising that the independent Maltese entrepreneur desired something more than the traditional chamber to represent him and having an ability to direct small businesses to act collectively in defence of their rights and demands, he had the courage to found GRU - the General Retailers Union - which soon after developed into the GRTU - the General Retailers and Traders Union.

GRTU was at once a trade association, a chamber of retailers and traders, and a movement of independent private businesses. This was in 1948, soon after the workers` movement organised itself exceptionally well, following the establishment of the General Workers Union. Since 1948, GRTU has not looked back. With a membership surpassing 6,000 businesses, it is by far Malta`s largest organisation of independent entrepreneurs.

As politics in Malta began to sustain the pressures of organised trade unionism, it was inescapable that the self-employed entrepreneur should organise in a national lobby that strives to ensure the necessary balance in the pressures on Government that would lead to more equitable economic, social, legislative and administrative structures.

Using his excellent rapport with the two arms of the administration of Malta, the Imperial Government and the civil administration, he was, perhaps, Malta`s first professional lobbyist.

Anthony Griscti as the first president of the GRTU (1948-1955) imbued the organisation with what was essentially his enthusiasm, honesty of purpose, energy, vision and an indomitable spirit that fears none, whatever the political or ideological shade of the powers that dominated our fair land over the last 54 years.

Anthony was a methodical organiser. He spoke, wrote, founded and edited GRTU`s 54-year-old magazine The Retailer, consistently pressurising the authorities to act on behalf of small businesses. The issues he raised remain with us today: stifling bureaucracy, indecision, lack of assistance to small businesses, protectionism, hindrance of free trade excessive labour union power, national sovereignty and identity.

Realising that Maltese entrepreneurs needed a national pavilion to exhibit their production and to help retailers and craftsmen to reach out to a wider market, he had the foresight to cause GRTU`s National Executive to establish the Malta Trade Fair.

From its initial timid birth at San Anton Gradens, he had the wisdom to grasp the opportunity offered by the availability of Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar and moved the Trade Fair, first to Palazzo Parisio itself, and later to the grounds of the palace where the Malta Trade Fair Corporation is established today.

Anthony Griscti leaves to mourn a family whom he loved above all else. His beloved wife, Memè, passed away only three years ago at the age of 93. She was his constant support and inspiration. It was his desire since to rejoin her. His two daughers, son, and grandchildren carry the honour of being descendants of a remarkable man.

The Good Lord will surely reward him for an extremely successful life on earth. To his family and the thousands and thousands of Maltese entrepreneurs who over half a century belonged to GRTU, he bequeathes what was proudly his: the joy of living honestly.

Malta has lost a great man. A man of gold.

Appreciation - Gordon McNally

by Mrs Carmen Gatt Baldacchino

Gordon McNally, former chairman of the Exchange Travel Group, passed away recently.

My late husband and I had known Gordon for many years, being a business associate in the travel business for nearly 30 years.

It was Gordon who, in the 1950s, when on a British Government fact-finding mission, not only recognised Malta`s unique tourism potential but was the first to really do something about it.

Many in the tourist industry surely remember him and appreciate his efforts throughout the Seventies and Eighties, and his support for Malta in its endeavour to maintain at a high level the British market.

The tourist sector has much to thank Gordon for, since he introduced Malta to so many and promoted the islands at such an important stage of tourist development. Quoting his own words he had "a very special affection for the Maltese Islands" and "a deep and genuine love for Malta".

Gordon has always been a much loved gentleman, understanding, loyal and a most valued friend.

To all his family, my deepest sympathy for such a great loss. He will always be remembered and his friendship will always be cherished.
