People were today warned to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts to settle.

The World Health Organisation said it does not know what the health risks are from the ash cloud.

But a spokesman said the ash was potentially dangerous because inhaled particles can reach the lungs and cause respiratory problems.

There is a heightened danger for those suffering from asthma and respiratory diseases.

He said WHO was monitoring the situation closely.
