An oral mineral supplement available online could cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure, the Public Health Regulation Department warned.

In a statement, it said that Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) is available for sale in Europe and over the internet. MMS2 is in the form of capsules.

A wide range of scientifically-unsubstantiated claims are made for the 'therapeutic' effect of the products contained in the supplement.

But adverse effects following ingestion of the product have been reported.

Miracle Mineral Solution contains 28 per cent sodium chlorite solution which is equivalent to industrial-strength bleach.

When taken as directed it could cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure. A stronger could cause damage to the intestines and to the blood cells and could potentially result in kidney failure.

Although there has also been one media report of a death associated with use of the product, this could not be officially confirmed, the department said.

It advised the public not to procure the product and said that those who already did should throw it away immediately. If they have consumed it and feel unwell, they should consult their doctor.

The department said that the quality, safety and efficacy of products bought over the internet could not be always be guaranteed so one should avoid buying medicinal products in this way.
