Hamrun 3

Qormi 1

Hamrun Spartans made the perfect start to the new season with a comfortable 3-1 victory against an overhauled Qormi side. In a cagey opening period, both teams looked comfortable in possession but seemed little shy in making the final push at goal until Hamrun surged forward on the 20th minute. Pereira provided a neat pass to Mangion on the edge of the box, to shoot low into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance.

Qormi could have felt hard done by going a goal down but they equalised 12 minutes later. David Camilleri failed to cover a teasing cross by Ben Camilleri and after the ball went through the legs of Kosta Bjedov, an unmarked George Mallia tucked the ball in at the far post.

The game appeared now to be going Qormi’s way before Hamrun struck back thanks to the precocious talent of Gaetan Spiteri. On 43 minutes, the nippy striker sent Pereira clear with a defence-splitting back and the Brazilian lashed a low shot through the legs of Farrugia.

After 70 minutes, Dene Shields drilled the ball low into the far corner from 20 metres, to put the match beyond their opponents.
