Sylvester James, 22 of Hamrun was today granted bail after having been accused of damaging two cars and slightly injured a woman in a fight in Hamrun last Monday afternoon.

He was accused of causing damage of under €1,164 to a Seat Toledo and a Honda Civic during the fight.

Defence lawyer José Herrera said that his client was at home with his family when the front door was kicked down and a number of men went straight for his client and beat him up. He added that Mr James had acted in self-defence.

Police Inspector Joseph Agius said that Mr James has become well known with the police in Ħamrun especially because of his involvement in fights in the area.

The prosecution asked the court to deny bail because the accused had relapsed and there were witnesses still to be heard, a point which his lawyer said was an unfounded fear because the witnesses were the aggressors.

After taking into consideration the arguments put forward by the defence team Magistrate Audrey Demicoli granted Mr James bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €3,000.
