Ħamrun Spartans fended off Tarxien Rainbows' late rally to register a precious win.

The Spartans looked to be well in command when they surged into a two-goal lead inside the opening hour.

But Ricardo Faria's late penalty for Tarxien set up a tense finale with the Spartans just doing enough to bag the three points.

Ħamrun made all the early running and they deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes.

Thiago Espindola's delivery from a free-kick was met by Tiago and the Brazilian headed the ball into the net.

The Reds continued to boss the proceedings and they doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half.

Dale Camilleri and Davide Succi combined well with a serious of passes before setting up Marco Criaco who beat Antonio Chetcuti with a firm drive.

Tarxien were handed a lifeline ten minutes from time when Succi was adjudged to have fouled Ebiabowei Baker inside the area and from the spot Ricardo Faria drilled the ball into the net.

However, that was too little too late as the Spartans held on to the point.

Player of the match: Dale Camilleri (Ħamrun Spartans).
