The Ħamrun council was awarded the EU’s Golden Star honour for the best project on an international level organised in the EU.

The award, the most prestigious in its category, forms part of the Citizens for Europe programme.

It is granted by the European Union Commission to local and regional organisations in Europe, for their commitment aimed to improve and develop social and cultural aspects of the community.

Ħamrun won through its town twinning with Carpineto Romano in Italy, back in March. This agreement between the two towns flourished in the activities held in May 2009, with the first typical Italian Palio della Carriera festival held in the streets of Ħamrun.

The Golden Star Award is the most important certificate of the commitment and success achieved by the Town Twinning and foresees s bright future for forthcoming initiatives.
