Ħamrun Spartans were back to winning ways when they came from a goal down to see off Senglea Athletic at the Centenary Stadium.

It was Senglea who took the lead on 11 minutes when Rene Caseres seized possession on the edge of the area and hit a ferocious drive that gave no chance to Galea.

The Spartans looked rattled and they almost conceded a second goal on 22 minutes. Ivan Paz’s delivery from a corner was met by Steve Bonnici and his dipping header came off the bar.

The Spartans equalised six minutes from the break .

Thiago Espindola sent a curling cross towards the unmarked Triston Caruana who headed past Cetrangolo.

On 54 minutes, Micallef played in Guilherme who was brought down in the area by Steve Bonnici with the referee pointing to the spot. Marino Clavero stepped up for the kick and drilled the ball past Cetrangelo.

Senglea refused to throw in the towel and on 68 minutes substitute Terence Vella was sandwiched between Thiago and Karl Micallef with the referee ordering a second penalty.

But from the spot, Paz saw his shot pushed away by Jake Galea.

Twelve minutes from time, Zaccardo, who had just replaced the unfit Philip Chircop, had a glorious chance to kill off the match when he found himself in space in the area but lobbed the ball over Cetrangelo.

Ħamrun remained on top and Thiago was unlucky not to put his name on the scoreseheet when his inswinger came off the bar.

Senglea suffered more woes as on 84 minutes Paz was shown a straight red card after hitting Zaccardo.

The Spartans soon made their numerical advantage count as a minute later Thiago connected to Guilherme’s cross and head the ball into the far corner.
