Division Two

Zebbug Rangers 0
St George's 2

St George's produced another good performance to notch their fourth victory of the season and maintain their high position in the standings, one point behind leaders Gzira United.

Zebbug, unbeaten before kick-off, conceded their first goal after 11 minutes when Vince Camilleri's low drive finished in the net.

The Rangers looked to have levelled the score but Keith Farrugia's strike from a free-kick was disallowed by the referee for an infringement amid protests.

Play was balanced as Zebbug twice tested Gatt through efforts by Rodney Bugeja and Stefan Micallef. But in a counter-attack in the 71st minute, the Saints doubled their lead and sealed the points thanks to an Ivan Camilleri penalty, ordered for a foul by Zebbug 'keeper Attard on the same Saints' striker.

Referee: J.R. Attard.

St Andrews 0
Gzira United 2

Two late goals awarded victory to leaders Gzira United in this evenly-fought encounter which saw the Maroons maintaining top spots.

Gzira assumed the initiative early on, an Etienne Cini free-kick going inches wide. Cini was unlucky in the 16th minute when his effort bounced off the bar. Gzira again went close on two other occasions through fine efforts from Cini and Kevin Naudi.

St Andrews improved after the break and Dale Spiteri and Anthony Galea could have opened the scoring for their side.

The match seemed heading to a goalless draw when four minutes from time Charles Gatt tapped home from a corner.

Deep into stoppage time, Gzira sealed the issue when Matthew Cocks concluded a fine solo move. The match ended on a sour note as the referee sent off Junior Sank (St Andrews) and Lawrence Vella (Gzira).

The racist chants from a section of the supporters towards a St Andrews player were certainly uncalled for and strongly deplorable.

Referee: Ian Miller.

Division Three

Pembroke Athleta 4
Mgarr United 1

Albert Cristiano's Pembroke obtained their third victory from four matches to move just one point behind leaders Birzebbuga. Their victims last weekend were Mgarr who remained rock bottom in the table.

Pembroke were the better team throughout but had to wait until the 27th minute to surge ahead through Simon Buhagiar.

Mgarr's reaction was weak and on 38 minutes Pembroke increased their lead. Mgarr 'keeper Fenech failed to clear and Clint Hili profited from the blunder to make it 2-0.

Joe Pace pulled one back for Mgarr after the break but Carlo Leonardi made sure of his side's points with two goals in the last 15 minutes. Leonardi has now scored six times in four outings.

Referee: Adrian Ferriggi.

Qormi 1
Gharghur 1

This was a highly-charged encounter with the two promotion seekers sharing the spoils at the end of an entertaining match.

The first period saw Qormi creating the better chances but Gharghur were dangerous up front with Jeremy Dalli and Kris Sargent very much in evidence for their team.

Qormi held the initiative after the break, going close through Clyde Grech and Mark Tabone. In the 58th minute Steve Baldacchino wasted an easy chance to break the deadlock but in the 65th minute Qormi shot ahead when Johan Scicluna drove a low shot into the net.

However, Gharghur's reaction was strong and 16 minutes from time they deservedly drew level when Dalli headed in from a corner.

Referee: Ronnie Farrugia.

Gudja United 1
Siggiewi 1

A point each was a deserving reward for both teams as they took the field with a bold intent to gain something from this match.

With the two sets of defences dominating proceedings, goalmouth action was a rare commodity.

Siggiewi were first to score soon after the restart through Godfrey Camilleri but seven minutes later it was all square when Charlò Debattista headed in from a free-kick.

Referee: William Debattista.

Melita 0
Kirkop United 0

This was a balanced match with Melita having to play for most of the second period with ten players after having Adriano Fenech sent off. Kirkop performed creditably and were worth the point they obtained.

Melita held the initiative for long stretches during the first period but Gregory Degabriele and Fenech failed to find the Kirkop net.

On 34 minutes, Kirkop almost took the lead but Tyron Bonnici's powerful drive just missed the far post.

On the hour, Melita were reduced to ten players when Fenech was red-carded for a second caution.

Kirkop surged forward but Melita goalkeeper Aquilina was in defiant mood to save a point for his side.

Referee: Malcolm Mercieca.
