A 24-year-old labourer allegedly involved in yesterday’s shooting at a garage complex in Triq Luqa Briffa Gzira has been granted bail by a court after denying all charges.

Steve Saliba was arraigned before Magistrate Gabriella Vella and accused of attempting to seriously injure 43-year-old Roger Sciberras. The latter owns a garage within the same complex, albeit on a different floor.

Mr Saliba was also accused of being in possession of an unlicensed home-made firearm.

Sources said the incident was triggered by an argument over the electricity main switch, after one of the parties complained that somebody was turning off the lights, thus leaving the complex in pitch darkness. The argument escalated with the accused allegedly opening fire. Mr Sciberras was not hit.

Mr Saliba was granted bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €5,000. He was also ordered not to approach Mr Sciberras's family or the garage complex.

Lawyer Albert Zerafa was defence counsel, while lawyer Stephen Farrugia Sacco was parte civile for the victim. The prosecution was led by police inspectors Joseph Mercieca and Lara Butters.
