Mia Division Two

Zebbug Rangers 0
Gzira United 0

Leaders Gzira were held to a goalless draw by Zebbug as the Maroons maintained a five-point lead over their closest rivals in the standings.

Zebbug went close early on through Bruce Genovese and Malcolm Borg with Gzira's Alex Farrugia seeing his 15th-minute effort bouncing off the bar. In the 28th minute, Zebbug almost scored through George Saliba and on another occasion a Stephen Cassar free-kick was saved by Bonello.

Gzira went all out for a goal soon after the break but Kevin Naudi failed to find the opponents' net from good positions. Zebbug had an 80th-minute Rodney Bugeja shot saved by Bonello with the assistance of the bar.

Late in the match, Zebbug created good goal scoring chances through Bugeja and George Saliba but the score remained unaltered.

St George's 1
Zejtun Corinthians 1

Zejtun Corinthians were close to an upset but promotion contenders St George's avoided defeat with a goal five minutes into stoppage time.

St George's dictated the run of play keeping Zejtun goalkeeper Matthew Mifsud alert for most of the time as he effected saves on Clint Schiavone and Lawrence Mizzi early on.

In the 35th minute, the Saints could have taken the lead but Johan Spiteri's header was superbly parried by Mifsud and on another occasion Spiteri was again close with a low drive which the Zejtun no.1 somehow blocked on the goal line.

St George's maintained the upperhand after the break, Abela wasting a clear-cut chance when he blasted against the upright with an open goal at his mercy. For this St George's paid dearly as 13 minutes from time James Galea lobbed home to put Zejtun in front.

Heathcliffe Schembri and Johan Spiteri saw their efforts stopped by Mifsud but in the 95th minute the Saints deservedly drew level with an Ivan Camilleri goal, leaving Zejtun still searching for their first win after 10 outings.

Mellieha 0
Attard 1

This result has opened the promotion race wide open as Attard have now joined Mellieha in third place, one point behind St George's.

The first period was a balanced affair with Attard, however, creating the better goal scoring opportunities.

Early on, two efforts by Jason Borg just missed the target and on 28 minutes a strong Eman Ciappara shot was saved by Mellieha goalie David Vella. In the 37th minute, Attard 'keeper Tyrone Spiteri saved well off a Kevin Gambin direct free-kick with Mellieha going close in the 51st minute through Adrian Galea.

The balance was broken 12 minutes from the final whistle when Attard scored the winner, Ciappara netting from a corner.

Spiteri was in excellent form to stop Mellieha from a late equaliser and denying Mario Debono from goal.

Zurrieq 1
Dingli Swallows 0

Zurrieq continued to recover lost ground as they obtained their fourth victory with Dingli falling to their fourth successive defeat. Zurrieq introduced young goalkeeper Julian Azzopardi. He capped a positive match with a clean sheet.

Siggiewi 2
Birzebbuga 2

Promotion chasers Birzebbuga dropped further points as they were held to a draw by Siggiewi.

After just four minutes, Birzebbuga were unlucky when Josef Mansueto's effort hit the upright but in the 10th minute Darren Prendergast shot them into the lead.

Siggiewi drew level in the 27th minute through Josef Micallef but Larson Pace put Birzebbuga back in front after the break following an indecision by Siggiewi goalkeeper Vella.

Siggiewi surged forward in attack and obtained a deserved equaliser three minutes from time when James Micallef headed home from a free-kick.

Referee: George Bitri.

Mgarr United 0
Qormi 2

As expected, Qormi beat lowly Mgarr United to maintain their promotion bid as newly-acquired striker Carmel Formosa, formerly of Marsaxlokk, scored on his debut.

Qormi attacked from the word go with Mgarr veteran goalkeeper Joe Muscat making various difficult saves. Qormi, however, broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when Michael Borg Olivier headed in from a James Tabone cross.

Two minutes later, Borg Olivier provided the cross which permitted Formosa to score from close-range to double Qormi's lead.

Pembroke Athleta 1
Sta Venera 3

Stephen Said was the protagonist in this useful victory for Sta Venera as he scored his first two goals of the season.

Pembroke had a good start but it was Sta Venera who netted first after 18 minutes through an opportunistic Said goal. Five minutes later, Sta Venera again were close through Andrew Hili with Pembroke drawing level through a low Andre Cachia shot following a good move by Leonardi.

Four minutes before the interval, a Leonardi goal was disallowed for offside but on 45 minutes Said scored his second following a good move by Zammit.

Sta Venera opted to control their lead after the break and on 77 minutes Denis Bonello sealed the issue with a third goal, finishing off a good move by Saliba.

Referee: Andre Arciola.

Fgura United 1
Gharghur 1

This was a fair result which leaves both teams in a mid-table position.

Gharghur's latest acquisition, Keith Seychell, who they signed on loan from Premier League side Hibernians, scored on his debut.

Gharghur played the better football early on... a Christian Glass header was saved by Mifsud.

In the 19th minute, Gharghur broke the deadlock when Seychell headed home from a Glass cross.

Eleven minutes from time Kris Vella Petroni, of Gharghur, was sent off for a double caution.

Two minutes later, Fgura's Sean Kelly was on target when he hit an excellent shot to make it all square.

Referee: Mariano Debono.
