The GWU insisted today that the members of the police force should be able to enjoy the constitutional right of freedom of association, including the right to choose their own trade union.

Reacting to comments by the Minister of Home Affairs that the Police Association would be given the legal standing of a trade union, the GWU observed that the police would still not be able to join the trade union of their choice. Furthermore, it pointed out, the Police Association was headed by the Commissioner.

It asked what use would it have been for the Police Association to take part in the talks on the civil service collective agreement - as it was invited to do by the government - when it was headed by the Police Commissioner.
