The General Workers’ Union has warned ST Micro Electronics of industrial action following a breakdown in negotiations over a new collective agreement.

The union yesterday claimed ST was insisting on sticking to austerity measures that expired in 2012, despite ongoing meetings in the presence of the director of labour.

“These measures were adopted by the company at a time when it was facing problems as a consequence of the economic and financial crisis of 2008,” a GWU spokesman said. The agreement was ap-proved by secret ballot by the workers, and the measures included a reduction in salaries, in order to give a lease of life to the company so that it could keep on operating in Malta.

Following meetings with the workers, the GWU decided to issue an industrial action warning.
