The GWU warned today that more workers were at risk of being impacted by the current economic turmoil, and this was not the time for the government to impose further burdens such as higher utility bills.

The union said that a meeting of its national council had discussed the current employment situation and expressed solidarity with the 84 workers at Toly Products who have been dismissed. The council also expressed solidarity with Trelleborg employees who have been put on a four-day week.

The union urged the government to be sensitive to what was taking place in the manufacturing industry and shoulder its social responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the social partners are to discuss the electricity rates at a meeting this afternoon. Ministers have not been invited to the meeting.
