The GWU said today that it will continue to insist for changes to the cost of living adjustment mechanism (COLA) so that its workings become based on the value of the average wage and not the social wage.

The union said it was concerned by the heavy burden imposed on households through the latest increase in diesel and gas prices and the increase, from tomorrow, of milk and ricotta prices.

The government, it said, was insensitive to the people's hardship, even as more people were dragged closer to the poverty line.

The union said it seriously doubted that local fuel prices reflected international oil prices.

It  said the current situation continued to justify its campaign of showing up the government as being heartless and insensitive, with its actions creating new problems to the people as well as undermining competitiveness.
