The General Workers Union this morning challenged Opposition leader Simon Busuttil to repeat outside Parliament claims he made about the union yesterday during the debate on the Enemalta-Shanghai agreement.

During his speech, Dr Busuttil said the Opposition was concerned for Enemalta's workers who were promised that their jobs were assured and that their take home pay would not be reduced.

He said these workers were now bewildered how they had actually been deceived and asked where was the GWU in all this, if it was serving the interests of the workers or the government and what it was pocketing to keep its mouth shut.

The union said that no threats from Dr Busuttil would stop its work in the best interest of workers.

Dr Busuttil, the GWU said, knew that there was now a government with whom one could discuss solutions rather than one which threatened with job dismissals, as the previous government used to do.

Dr Busuttil should have said what the future of Enemalta workers would have been had the Nationalist government remained in office.

PN: GWU HAS WOKEN UP TO ATTACK BUSUTTIL INSTEAD OF

DEFENDING THE WORKERS

In a reaction, the Nationalist Party said the GWU had finally woken up, but to attack Dr Busuttil rather than to defend the Enemalta workers.

The GWU in its statement had said nothing about the betrayal of the Enemalta workers but had attacked Dr Busuttil instead.

The PN said Dr Busuttil was challenging the GWU to defend the Enemalta workers. The union was also being challenged to say what revenue it was making from the government and public authorities for use of its properties. Its members had a right to know what relationship there was between the union and the government.
