The General Workers’ Union has promised to set up a cooperative for port workers as soon as it was given official recognition.

The GWU and the Malta Dockers’ Union are currently at loggerheads over the former’s request for official recognition, with both saying they enjoy a majority.

The MDU is insisting it has the majority with 327 out of the 370 licensed workers paying it a membership fee.

MDU’s claim was backed by the Malta Maritime Authority and the Malta Freeport Authority.

But the GWU said it had enough proof to confirm it enjoyed the majority support of licensed port workers.

The GWU said today that one of its first tasks as soon as it was awarded recognition would be to request an investigation for workers to get to know what had become of the millions of liri they had in a fund.
