The General Workers' Union has wished Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi well in his work over the next five years, declaring it was prepared to work with whoever respected, and not undermined, its role and existence.

For the GWU, the workers came first and foremost. This mission would continue to remain the sole objective of Malta's largest union that would work for the good of workers, pensioners, youths and their families, it said.

The union urged the Prime Minister to better safeguard the interests of Maltese and Gozitan workers in the next legislature. It was making this appeal because the labour market in Malta was becoming more diversified and harsh. This reality was affecting many workers negatively.

The GWU also hoped that in the coming years there would be more work and opportunities for full-time indefinite contracts under good conditions that would give dignity to the workers.

An appeal was also made to the Prime Minister to help, rather than undermine in any way, the GWU in its trade union work at various places of work, especially where the public sector was concerned.
