Enemalta this evening accused the General Workers’ Union of persisting in deceit and using an intransigent and capricious attitude when alleging discriminatory behaviour by the corporation.
Earlier today, the union called for the holding of an independent, public inquiry into what it said was discrimination against some workers by the corporation. It said it was giving Enemalta two days to accept this proposal.
The union has been holding industrial action at the corporation in protest over the deployment of workers at the Credit Control Section.
In a statement this evening, Enemalta said that for the GWU, discrimination was retaining employees of the now defunct section and offering them other opportunities in the same scale instead of dismissing them.
Enemalta said the union wanted the workers to remain on a 12-hour shift, and to continue working on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays to collect payments from industry, which did not operate on such days.
The corporation said that because of the union’s actions, there were more than 1,000 applications for Enemalta services which could not be seen to.
It denied all allegations made by the union.
