The GWU has urged the government to further revise the pensions system to ensure that it is adequate for all sections of the population.

In a statement, it noted that the government recently raised the salaries of the members of the judiciary and it had now presented legislation to raise their pensions.

The union said it was not against raising such pensions, but all sections of the population should have a right to adequate pensions and not just one.

The union urged the government to remove anomalies which at present meant that many pensioners were not getting a pension equivalent to two-thirds of the current salary. Furthermore, no pension should be less than 60% of the average salary. Bonuses given instead of salary increases should be included in the pensions formula, it said.
