The GWU has denied claims in the PN media that it is stopping the publication of correspondence in its newspapers because they make reference to particular persons who will stand or have shown an interest in standing for the MLP leadership. The PN media made those allegations with regard to George Abela, the union's former legal adviser.

The union said that while it was responsible to ensure that its views were reflected in its own newspapers, it was then up to the editors to decide what was published, whether that involved articles or correspondence.

The union said that while it had a right for its own opinion as a national organisation , it felt it would be wiser to allow the leadership process to follow its natural course in a transparent manner without involving itself in speculation on who will, or will not, stand for election.

The GWU said it was ensuring that what was reported was factual and not speculation.
