The GWU has called for the holding of an independent, public inquiry into what it said was discrimination against some workers by Enemalta, and its poor industrial relations record.

Union General Secretary Tony Zarb said the union was giving Enemalta two days to accept this proposal, adding that 'there is a limit to everything'.

The union has been holding industrial action at the corporation in protest over the deployment of workers at the Credit Control Section.

Mr Zarb said the union had been responsible in its industrial actions so far, to ensure that the country did not suffer power cuts, and yet it had been criticised even by the Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber, he said, should accept this proposal as a means for breaking the current stalemate.

Industrial action would stop once the investigation was launched, Mr Zarb said, but the process should not take more than two weeks.

Mr Zarb also published sworn statements by union shop steward Charles Magro, where he declared that while in the office of the Human Resources Manager, he was offered €23,000 due as extra payments to the workers of the Credit Control Section, as long as he accepted their transfer of a worker without protest.
