The General Workers Union today appealed to European Parliament candidates to work for a social Europe and to stop austerity measures and precarious employment.

Presenting its wishlist to the candidates, the union said it was concerned about the present state of affairs in Europe which currently has 26.5 million unemployed people, including 5.7 million youths.

General Secretary Tony Zarb said its manifesto is the same as that of the European Trade Union Confederation which is calling for a social Europe.

The GWU is also calling for assurances from MEP candidates who are elected that they would work in Malta's interests if elected.

Mr Zarb said the union wanted a Europe which is pro-business and pro-workers, putting an end to precarious jobs, underpaid work and austerity measures which are pushing Europeans to the edge.

The union also wants social justice, combating discrimination at all levels and quality public services. It also wants respect for human rights and fair fiscal policies.
