The General Workers' Union has said it will be ordering industrial action at the British Pensions Office (Malta) as from Wednesday.

The union said in a statement the action was being taken as a result of a dispute with the Ministry of Defence (United Kingdom), responsible for the British Pensions Office in Malta, over the closure of the office announced earlier this year.

The authorities had also failed to conclude and speed up an agreement on termination benefits for employees who served the British government for many years and who were well respected by both the local clients and the British authorities themselves.

The union said it regretted any inconvenience the action may cause local pensioners and efforts were being made to ensure that the impact on pensioners would be minimal.

The GWU said it asked the British Trade Union Congress to help in the issue.
