Lyndon Trott, Chief Minister of Guernsey visited the European Parliament this week to discuss EU relations with the Crown dependency of Guernsey. Mr Trott said he wanted to bring his country closer to the EU.

In a private meeting with Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil the Chief Minister noted Malta's similarities with the island of Guernsey and highlighted the importance of the financial services sector in both states.

Dr Busuttil said that Malta has a crucial role to play in EU relations with small states such as Guernsey and Iceland.

"Not only do we understand the plight of small states being the smallest country in the EU, but we also know the ins and outs for small states seeking to associate with the Union", Dr Busuttil said.

Guernsey's financial services sector ranks highly in the world of international finance and surpass several other centres such as Dublin and Luxembourg. An advantageous tax regime coupled with considerable safeguards is attributed to Guernsey's success in the sector.
