Shirley Mifsud of General Soft Drinks Co Ltd has received the prestigious British Safety Council International Diploma in Safety Management at a reception at Trinity House in London.

Ms Mifsud was one of 15 delegates from five different countries who spent six weeks studying subjects ranging from problem-solving and decision-making to communications, fire protection, occupational health, advanced safety management and total loss control.

Delegates were trained to develop the expertise and techniques they need to protect people, property and material, and financial resources.

Networking opportunities and a chance to pool experience were also important to delegates who represented a wide range of companies including Saudi Arabia Fertiliser Company and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company.

"Good safety is good business and can save firms hundreds of thousands of pounds. Proper training for the safety professional is vital for business. If they are to maintan their edge over competitors, companies must ensure their operations are accident-free. In sending their delegates on this course, the organisations represented here have demonstrated a high regard for safety and quality," David Ballard, director general of the British Safety Council, said.
