The increase in the price of gas has been deplored by the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises, GRTU.

It said in a statement that for the second time in less than six months, at a time when the economic situation was weak, the Malta Resources Authority had again failed in its duty to defend consumers of this essential service and had approving the requested price increase.

This has burdened the consumer with another increase of more than 30 percent on the increase annouced only a few months ago.

The GRTU said that many small and medium businesses had switched to gas from electricity in the past two years and these people would be suffering, especially since they could not raise prices to recover the increase in the current circumstances.

The price of gas since April, the GRTU said, had increased by more than 90 percent. Yet again, this was another privatisation exercise which put consumers at a disadvantage.
