The GRTU has submitted a formal request to the Prime Minister in his capacity as Finance Minister to move  legislation to ban banks and credit card companies from charging retail transactions. This legislation, the GRTU said, should be brought into force before the euro is introduced.

The GRTU said that the yearly charges the banks impose on consumers, and the charges that the banks and credit card companies imposed on retailers every time a purchase was made was abusive.

The GRTU also argued that the Lm7 annual tax on every card was an unjust measure imposed on consumers by the government.
