The Gozo University Students Group (GUG) has urged the authorities to financially help Maltese students who are having to follow an LSA training course in Gozo.

Some 20 Maltese are having to follow the course in Gozo because not enough places were available in the course in Malta.

They have to commute to Gozo once or twice a week.

GUG said it was strongly urging the would-be Learning Support Assistants to continue their course in Gozo and strive to receive adequate treatment for the duration of this course.

“Since there were 20 LSA training posts left vacant in Gozo while the same number of extra candidates were found in Malta, it made sense to offer the course for these students in Gozo. In reality, these students will get more attention in the classroom due to a higher teacher-to-student ratio; this will give their academic and practical progress more space to grow than if they have to follow a course in Malta," GUG said.

“While we as GUG support this scheme, we understand that commuting to Gozo could create financial strain for these students; therefore, we urge that they be given adequate financial support to continue their studies, if this is not already in place.”

GUG said it also supported the use of video conference facilities where this was feasible.
