Salvu Felice Pace, in his failed error to find an excuse for the Nationalist "new spring" pipe dream, blamed Alfred Sant. Mr Felice Pace said (April 29) that "he (Alred Sant) has fallen into the trap which has ruined many a life by joining the modern trend we want it all and we want it now".

Dr Sant can be accused of anything but certainly not of fostering this materialistic and consumerist mentality. The attitude of spend now pay later saw its beginning in 1987, when the first Nationalist government was elected to power to find a healthy consolidated fund and sound finances. Back then it was a Nationalist minister who declared that our children will make good for our debts. How prophetic he was!

More near to our time it was Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami who said that Lm10 million would not do too much difference in the Mid-Med Bank sale to HSBC. It was gross inefficiency of successive Nationalist governments which saddled Malta with a Lm1.2 billion national debt that this glorious "new spring" has brought about.

Last year, Dr Sant and Labour, with feet firmly on the ground, warned of the dire consequences which Maltese families had to face as from this year. Unlike the Nationalists they did not deceive the people with false hopes. In his letter, Mr Felice Pace conveniently ignores the thousands who have lost their jobs during the last few months and those who are living in fear of losing theirs in a not too bright future.

Mr Felice Pace also ignores the Nationalist government's abysmal record in attracting foreign investment in Malta to create new employment. Foreign direct investment from Europe is flowing to Slovenia and the Czech Republic. What are we getting instead? Inflation is up as tourist figures continue to go down.

I agree with Mr Felice Pace on one point. He concluded his piece by asking "electors to reflect seriously on whom to trust with representing our people in the European Parliament when they vote on June 12". Yes, Mr Felice Pace, I did reflect and I do not trust the Nationalists any more. I will be voting Labour both for the European Parliament and for the local elections.
