The first Maltese Grenache grapes from the 2012 harvest arrived at the Delicata winery for pressing at the end of last week.

Following their independent QWPSR inspection from a government official, the DOK classification was given and the grapes sent to the press after de-stemming and chilling.

The Grenache Noir variety (there is also a Grenache Blanc variety) that is grown in Malta and Gozo produces grapes that make good blending wines because the grapes’ characteristics are compatible with other varieties.

The red wine produced from this variety tends to be light- to medium-bodied, which is great for easy-drinking, such as the red DOK Malta Medina Syrah Carignan Grenache blend.

But in Delicata’s opinion, this variety really comes into its own when it is used to make serious dry rosé wines, either on its own or when blended with Syrah as in the case with the DOK Malta 2011 Medina Grenache Syrah.
