The planning authority’s recently-launched online registration scheme for waste producers was deemed a step in the right direction by Green Pak, which runs the country’s largest waste recovery system.

“Every effort to help Malta move up from the bottom of the EU league where recycling of packaging waste is concerned is a step in the right direction and can serve Malta well in the near future,” it said.

The Malta Environment Planning Authority is advising producers of packaging, electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators to register online as part of an annual exercise.

Importers, manufacturers and producers trading in the Maltese market are required by law to recover and recycle the packaging generated through such activities.

By joining the Green Pak scheme, any operator automatically transfers these obligations to the scheme.

Established in 2004, Green Pak operates a compliance scheme that recovers and recycles packaging waste. By the end of last year it had recovered 7,172 tons of packaging waste, diverting it from the landfill.
