Martin Luther King once said: “I have a dream.’’ This year’s Eurovision Song Contest had the theme ‘Dare to dream’. I too have a dream, maybe not so big, but, nevertheless, important for me.

Recently, on the occasion of the inauguration of the regeneration of Ġnien l-Għarusa tal-Mosta, the Prime Minister remarked that Mosta lacks open spaces. That is true. But what has been done or is being done about this?

This need has been felt for a long time. Our town, which developed quickly during the last few years, deserves better.

My dream is that the two big private gardens in the centre will not be swallowed up and built, as happened and is happening to many gardens in Mosta and elsewhere but will be preserved and, in the future, turned into public gardens.

Ġnien l-Għarusa tal-Mosta, “a gem’’ as the Prime Minister said, is too far from many parts of the town for the elderly whose numbers are increasing and who would benefit a lot from such open spaces. Fresh air is badly needed in our overpopulated island to combat the poisonous fumes produced by the increasing number of cars.

As Stanley Farrugia Randon said in his article ‘Health versus economic growth’ (May 20), “the health effects of air pollution on women, their infants and children are alarming’’.

Need we say more? Do we know what we are doing? Why have we let greed take over completely?

In the debate between the two main political leaders last week, the Prime Minister admitted that the environment was a government failing. NGOs have been talking about this for a long time. Why were they hardly listened to and their complaints and suggestions ignored?

The least the authorities can do is take great care of what is left and not let it be sacrificed for greed’s sake. Future generations will be grateful for at least leaving something for them to enjoy.
