Following the success of GreenPak's waste packaging scheme, Green Dot Malta Ltd has been awarded the appropriate Mepa permit to operate a non-profit WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) compliance scheme entitled WEEE Recycle.

The European Union's WEEE directive aims to prevent the waste of electrical and electronic equipment. The directive primarily aims to promote re-use and recycling to reduce amounts of waste-disposal, and seek to improve the environmental performance of producers and customers alike. The directive also puts the responsibility with regard to the financing of WEEE recovery and recycling on the business community. This directive applies to 10 categories of electrical and electronic equipment, from household appliances to medical devices, such as IT and telecommunications equipment, leisure, sports and lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, and automatic dispensers among others.

Green Dot Malta Ltd, as the pioneer in the Maltese islands where recycling and recovery of packaging waste is concerned, will be utilising the experience gained through the successful GreenPak scheme to establish WEEE Recycle. Furthermore, it will put to good use the good working relationships it has fostered with other PRO-Europe members on the continent to gain valuable practical and technical know-how in the operation of WEEE Recycle.
