Great glee is greeting the trials and tribulations being undergone by the Euro. Much of it is being shown by the Euro-sceptic Brits, generally of the insular and chauvinistic variety, who are going around thanking whatever god they recognise (usually mammon) that the UK never joined, otherwise where would they be now?

I suspect they wouldn't be in a situation that's much different to the one they're in now, in fact maybe they'd be better off, because after contributing to it in no small way through the rapaciousness of the system of which they call themselves leaders, they're now on the outside of the discussion process, looking in.

This glee is also being demonstrated in no small way by the current Leader of the Opposition's predecessor, who is trying to chuck his weight around in the House and obstruct discussions about Malta participating in the rescue efforts. He's also just penned a great slab of newsprint in the other paper (last Sunday) which I didn't read, given that Sunday mornings should be dedicated to other pursuits, even if columns such as this are written by one of Malta's greatest writers of fiction.

Oh well, as long as he's enjoying himself, I suppose.

maltastar.com also gave us the benefit of its almost infinite capacity to educate when it quote M. Delors recently saying that the Euro was doomed from the start. The only problem is, Delors said precisely the opposite, blaming the current woes on the execution of the system not its inception.

Let's not attribute this to deliberate misinformation, shall we? Let's say the good folk at maltastar.com are incapable of reading English, instead: after all, their inability to write is well known and documented (check out azzopardinicky.com) The alternative is that they're trying to tell us porkies, which certainly can't be the case.

Can it?
