Former President Censu Tabone and his wife Marija beamed with joy as they celebrated 70 years of wedding bliss today, surrounded by their large family.

Dr Tabone was surprised and overjoyed when a corps of Officers formed an arch of drawn swords as the happy couple emerged from the old parish church in St Julians - in the same way as was done 70 years ago when Dr Tabone was a Captain and wore his uniform for the wedding.

Archbishop Paul Cremona and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech celebrated the Mass, with Mgr Cremona describing the event as a celebration of love.

A congratulatory letter signed by Pope Benedict was read out.

And Dr Tabone - who says he loves his wife even more now than 70 years ago - sealed it all with a kiss.

Mrs Tabone, meanwhile, had prepared for the big day by preparing her own cake. She said their secret was to always accept what the Lord gave them, pointing out that they pray together every day.
