Carnival celebrations were opened by the 'Grandmaster' in Pjazza Teatru Rjal this evening as he read the bandu to enthusiasts who braved the rain while his soldiers and bandsmen looked on and the carnival flag was hoisted.

The grandmaster prohibited masquerades from carrying knives or pointed instruments, sticks or branches warning that law breakers would be punished with a year of galleon rowing or, in the case of women, a whipping and the costume taken away.

The celebrations were attended by Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera, carnival director Jason Busuttil and Valletta mayor Alexiei Dingli.

Besides in Valletta and Floriana, several towns and villages are also hosting carnival celebrations between today and Tuesday.

Nadur hosts a spontaneous carnival which has gained popularity in recent years.
