St John's Cavalier at the Citadel in Victoria is in danger of collapse and is posing a serious danger to visitors and passers-by, an environmental NGO has warned.

Wirt Ghawdex said the monument is dilapidated and no maintenance has been carried out for years.

Overgrown shrubs are causing severe damage to the stonework which has become displaced.

The Cavalier is leased to a telecommunications company which has installed several unsightly antennas on top of the building, the NGO said. Wirt Ghawdex appealed to the government and the Parliamentary Secretary for Land to revoke the lease and once again ensure that the site can be enjoyed by the public.

It also criticised the fact that there is no policy on the installation of flagpoles and antennas on the Citadel.

A master plan for the Citadel is being drawn up by the Gozo Ministry, and an EU co-funded project for the restoration of the bastions is underway.

Wirt Ghawdex, as a stakeholder, said it has submitted its proposals to the project team, which includes the creation of a Citadel management team responsible for such issues.
