A 22-year-old woman from Nadur died in a traffic accident in Munxar on Saturday night.
The police said that she had been a passenger in a Honda CRX driven by a 25-year-old man from Victoria, which collided with a Vauxhall Insignia driven by a 20-year-old man from Għasri at about 12.30am.
Both drivers were hospitalised and treated for slight injuries.
This is the second traffic fatality in Gozo this month, after a 30-year-old motorcyclist from Sannat died on April 4 when he crashed into an electricity pole in Mġarr Road, Xewkija.
Matt Meilak, 22, from Swieqi, died early on New Year’s Day after he was thrown from a car in Nadur in a collision.
A traffic expert who spoke to Times of Malta said the ‘spike’ in accidents was probably not the fault of the road system or speed limits.
Hugh Arnett, a former transport consultant, suggested they were caused by isolated circumstances although the risk could have been made worse by a larger-than-usual number of drivers in Gozo over Easter and the new year.
He said a number of young people were unaware of certain differences in the road system in Gozo, such as broken lines for slow-moving agricultural traffic, and tended to drive faster than they usually would, causing danger to themselves and other drivers.
