The Gozo Tornadoes won the first extra innings game of the season, an 11-innings marathon which included a late four-run comeback by the Mellieha Northenders to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Tornadoes pitcher and game winner Charles Attard entered the ninth inning in relief of starter Jeff Tabone who allowed no earned runs on three hits over eight innings. Normally a starter, Attard was ineffective in the inning, promptly giving up four runs to tie the game.

Both teams held each other scoreless until the 11th inning when Gozo's Shaun Chircop singled home Steve Galea for an 8-7 lead.

Attard then closed out the bottom half of the inning for his league leading fourth win. Tabone raised his batting average to .565 with a five-for-five performance. He trails Keith Bartolo who leads the league with a .571 average in that category.

Other result: Gzira vs Swieqi 21-11.

Standings: Gozo 4-1; Mellieha 4-1; Gzira 2-3; Swieqi 0-5.
